Fashion (now with a capital F) has been glorified for decades, with models and modelling agencies forced to take up sacrilegious practices such as "child labour, sexual harassment, drugs, and eating disorders", and sparking New Orders such as The Model Alliance to help raise awareness of some shocking statistics and crimes which the modelling world undertakes - Fashion is a huge business, and one that appears incapable of taking itself lightly.
Fashion moves quickly, faster than humanly possible, and working in the Fashion industry means you need to identify the new hot trends from the catwalks and Fashion shows and bring them straight to the red carpet and the high street. It's a tough job, but one that is run by a small council of designers and gurus, with links to big online clothes stores and magazines. The BFC (British Fashion Council), sponsored by Topshop, runs the prestigious annual London Fashion Week, a world-renowned event which attracts buyers and journalists from all over the world, and captures the attention of every teenage-fashion-blogger-girl for 4 or 5 marvellous days.
On a side note, I have a personal vendetta against Fashion bloggers - not because they are bad at what they do, but because they just take themselves so seriously.
But then, so does the whole of the Fashion world. From the red carpet to the smallest photoshoot, models, photographers, designers, and journalists can not get over themselves. Fashion infects people, and I guess it is just a side-effect of looking at yourself in the mirror all of the time.
Don't get me wrong here... I respect what the girls at The Model Alliance are doing to make the industry a safer place, but I can't help but feel that if the Fashion industry was just a little less caring about body fat, diets and what Holly Willoughby is doing, then the mental and health problems wouldn't exist in the first place.
I might write a bit more on this in the future, but I really want to hear some opinions on the topic. I tried to do as much research as possible into the subject, which is why I didn't post it on Saturday as originally planned, and instead I spent a couple of extra days making sure I had my facts straight and lots of source material. I still tried to cram it all into an easy-to-read article, though, so I did have to leave a lot of other opinions defending the industry out. Maybe I'll do the other side of the coin in a few weeks. We'll see.
